Media websites: what is their content‚ who is their public‚ and what is the economic model ?

Wednesday February 7, 2001

Philippe BISMUT
Chairman and Managing Director‚ Canal Numédia (part of the group Vivendi-Universal)

Summary

In the last year‚ the Internet is one of the four branches of the group Canal +‚ under the name CanalNumédia. From now on‚ Canal + represents the audio-visual division of the new global entertainment giant Vivendi Universal. CanalNumédia has a clearly defined role : it is a click-and-mortar company specialising in web packaging and drawing on the traditional assets of the group (its subscribers and contents)‚ to edit the websites. Neither a big group nor a start-up company‚ CanalNumédia should take up the challenge of making the most of its talents. Even more so‚ in these times of uncertainty about the evolution of new media‚ it should continue its development at a time when several big unanswered questions remain : which economic models will come to the fore ? What is necessary for the evolution of the infrastructures of broadcasting ? How will the balance of power evolve within this field ?
