The slogan of HBO, the American pay television network, "It's not TV. It's HBO." says it all. HBO offers a variety of programming on a subscription basis. It has built its reputation as the leading American television network without concern for the tyranny of audience ratings. However, this disregard for ratings does not completely explain HBO's success. It does not explain why one in three households in the U. S. is willing to pay for HBO ; how it became the springboard for iconoclastic programs such as SEX IN THE CITY, THE SOPRANOS, SIX FEET UNDER, AND BAND OF BROTHERS which have enjoyed worldwide success and regularly win Emmy Awards and numerous other accolades ; or how it has become the gold standard in the audiovisual world.
