In his analysis of the reasons for the resurgence of the semi-conductor industry in the United States, Jonathan West noticed that the ways in which Japanese and American companies organised themselves in order to achieve the performance level required by this very competitive market, are radically different. The key innovation which results in the return of the Americans to the top of the pile, is the creation of a technological integration stage between the research and the development phases. This integration stage allows the choice of the best option with which the development team will work from among the new solutions proposed by the research services and the technology available outside the company.
