The Mutuelle des Motards (the Biker's mutual insurance company) was created by bikers who were tired of constantly being refused by insurance companies and treated as scapegoats by road safety authorities. Its aim is to provide its members with insurance cover, specifically adapted to motorbike riders, and which suits their budgets. The Mutuelle first made a name for itself in the form of street protests, as its cause was supported by activists from the FFMC (Fédération Française des Motards en Colère - French Federation for Angry Bikers). It was regarded with contempt by the rest of the insurance establishment. Twenty-five years and 190,000 members later, the small, self-run mutual insurance company has fulfilled and even surpassed - its original commitments. Today, it is an outstanding example of the security proposed for motorised two-wheeled-vehicle users, and its innovations have been copied by all its rivals. The Mutuelle managed to achieve all this while still preserving the militant values of its founders, and establishing a genuine social commitment to its members and its employees. Not bad for people who until recently were nicknamed the 'beggars of the road' !
