The IT industry is not yet fifty years old. One tends to remember only the astonishing progress of technology throughout its spectacular development which enables the construction of machines which are increasingly efficient. However, companies in this industry have a very turbulent life : too short for some, briefly prestigious for others, but IT empires do not fail. An analysis of the mechanisms which underlie these phenomena dispels certain preconceived ideas, point out important trends and raise questions about the industrial economy.
